At the request of the Tanzanian Government, Bagamoyo Sugar Limited—a greenfield initiative under the Bakhresa Group—was established on December 1, 2016. The project, located in Makurunge, Bagamoyo District, aims to cultivate sugarcane on its nucleus estate and produce sugar locally. Its primary goal is to reduce reliance on sugar imports, achieve self-sufficiency, and eventually generate surplus sugar for export.
This marks the first large-scale initiative of its kind in Tanzania. The sugar processing plant is being supplied by Thyssenkrupp India Pvt Ltd, a German company operating in India, while the farm’s irrigation is powered by advanced digital farming technology from Netafim, an Israeli firm. The project is progressing on schedule, with commercial production expected to begin by mid-2022.
In its first phase, the facility is projected to produce approximately 30,000 tonnes of sugar. In line with the Group’s mission to uplift local communities, the Makurunge project is creating thousands of jobs for unemployed youth. The company upholds a policy of equal employment opportunity.
