The Tanzania Women Lawyers Association (TAWLA) is a non-governmental organization founded in 1989 and registered under the Societies Act of 1990. It adheres to the NGOs Act of 2002 and was officially granted NGO status in 2019. The organization’s mission focuses on advocating for gender equality and promoting human dignity and gender justice. It seeks to achieve these goals through policy advocacy, community engagement, media outreach, and legal and institutional reforms.
Violence against women and children is a pervasive issue in Tanzania, affecting the majority of women and children daily. Given its widespread nature, tackling this violence is a critical development priority. In Tanzania, such violence limits the country’s economic potential, wasting resources and hindering progress toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030, the African Union’s Agenda 2063, the Tanzania Development Vision 2025, the Tanzania Youth Development Policy of 2007.
The National Strategy for Youth Involvement in Agriculture (2016-2021) and the Country Development Cooperation Strategy (CDCS). TAWLA plays a key role as a technical partner in the “Building Rights for Improved Girl’s Health in Tanzania (BRIGHT)” project, which aims to integrate adolescent sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and nutrition care practices and interventions.
