Handeni Town Council, officially known as Wilaya ya Handeni Mjini, is an urban district located in the Tanga Region of Tanzania. As of the 2022 census, the district’s population stands at approximately 108,968 residents. The administrative capital of the district is Mdoe, and the town is bordered to the east by Handeni District and to the west by Kilindi District. Handeni Town Council is divided into 12 wards: Chanika, Kideleko, Konje, Kwamagome, Kwediyamba, Kwenjugo, Mabanda, Malezi, Mdoe, Mlimani, Msasa, and Vibaoni.
The town is well-connected by road, with a paved secondary road linking it to Korogwe in the northeast and Mkata in the southeast, both of which are on the T2 Trunk road from Dar es Salaam to Arusha. The council’s mission is to utilize available resources from all development partners in an equitable and participatory manner to provide high-quality services to its residents, reduce poverty, and achieve sustainable development and economic growth. The town has been the focus of various development initiatives, including the construction of new schools, health facilities, and infrastructure projects.
For instance, in November 2022, the Regional Commissioner of Tanga, Omari Tebweta Mgumba, visited Handeni Town Council to inspect several development projects, such as the construction of new secondary schools and health centers. Additionally, the council has been involved in the construction of a staff house at Msaje Dispensary to improve healthcare services in the area.
